So, what will actually happen if the sun rises in the Mediterranean on Monday and no agreement exits? Commerzbank has broken it down, step by step:
“Without a rescue package the government of Cyprus would default and could not pay for the urgently necessary re-capitalization of the country’s banks,” Commerzbank analysts wrote.
This would prevent the European Central Bank from lending money to the insolvent banking system and the banks in Cyprus would receive no further liquidity from the Emergency Liquidity Assistance.
In that case, Cyprus citizens would run on the banks to get as much cash as possible, causing the banks to run out of funds, become illiquid and fail.
“Since a modern economy does not work without a payment system, the government in this scenario would probably be forced to abolish the euro as a legal tender and introduce a currency of its own. Then, the central bank of Cyprus would be able to provide banks with liquidity which is a pre-condition to get the banking system and the real economy moving again,” the Commerzbank analysts said.
This would, however, have serious consequences for the Cypriot economy.
The new currency would rapidly depreciate and as government debt is denominated in euros, the debt pile would rise in the new currency, eventually leading to an unavoidable debt re-scheduling.
And what would this for other euro-zone countries? Not a whole lot.
“Investors would in all likelihood be able to cope even with a default on the €14bn of Cypriot government debt, €2.5bn of which are owned by the Russian government. The Greek debt cut cost investors €100bn after all,” the analysts said.
It could, however, lead to worries that other countries could leave the euro zone, potentially adding pressure on government bonds in other struggling economies. But Commerzbank bank argues this fear is overblown.
China “extremely concerned” about U.S.-Japan island talk – Everything needs to be escalated at this point. Keep pushing China. Plus Syria being accused of chemical weapons.
- (Reuters) – Japan and the United States have started talks on operational plans in the case of armed conflict over a group of East China Sea islets claimed by Tokyo and Beijing, Japanese media said on Thursday, prompting China to complain of “outside pressure”.
- “China is extremely concerned by these reports … The Chinese government has the determination and ability to maintain the nation’s territorial sovereignty,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.
S&P Cuts Cyprus Sovereign Credit Rating To CCC – What does this mean : CCC: An obligor rated ‘CCC’ is currently vulnerable, and is dependent upon favorable business, financial, and economic conditions to meet its financial commitments.
Remember S&P is being sued by the US and other credit agencies are banned from rating for 18 months.
Bernanke might be leaving early than expected. Bernanke said that Cyprus will not have an effect on the U.S.
New York set to pursue gun violations as Nazis pursued Jews in WWII – So it begins, report people with illegal guns. The is exactly what was in my Great Depression episode, when the president asked people to report on others for food, clothing etc. Here they are using money. This is what the Nazi’s did. Very sad.
At a time when all of us are finding ourselves doing more with less, a reminder about a resource available from New York State that can assist you in your efforts to solve cases, prevent crime and better serve and protect your communities.
The state has established a toll-free tip line – 1-855-GUNSNYS (1-855- 486-7697) to encourage residents to report illegal firearm possession. The tip line also allows for information to be submitted via text – individuals can text GUNTIP and their message to CRIMES (274637). While the state will provide the administrative support and fund the rewards, the investigation and validity of the tip will be up to each local department.
To spread the word about this free resource, New York State is planning a comprehensive campaign, including public service announcements that will air on television and radio stations across Upstate.
The tip line can provide your agencies with another avenue for receiving intelligence about crimes being committed in your jurisdictions. This initiative is designed for communities where no tip lines are in place and is not meant to replace existing gun tip lines.
Here’s how the tip line operates:
The New York State Police staff the tip line 24 hours a day. Upon receiving a call, troopers will solicit as much information as possible regarding a firearm tip, while allowing the individual to remain anonymous. The caller will be informed that this program is not the traditional gun buyback program but rather is focused on identifying individuals who are carrying an illegal firearm.
The State Police will in turn contact the appropriate police agency with the lead to initiate an investigation. Staff from the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) will follow up with that agency to determine the validity of the lead. Once the investigation is completed, the police agency would convey to DCJS the outcome of the investigation.
If the information leads to an arrest for the illegal possession of a firearm, the “tipster” will be awarded $500. DCJS staff will handle all of the financial transactions.
State Police staff will explain the program in its entirety upon notifying an agency that a lead has been generated for their jurisdiction. If you have any questions in the interim, please contact DCJS Deputy Commissioner Tony Perez in the Office of Public Safety at 518-485-7610.

A web site on Friday claims to have seen an urgent bulletin from the Russian Foreign Ministry sent to its embassies all over the world advising both Russian citizens and companies to begin divesting their assets from Western banking and financial institutions “immediately”.
The site said the Kremlin feared grow that both the European Union and United States were preparing for the largest theft of private wealth in modern history.
- Just received a call from a highly agitated bank manager who stated that within 60 days, banks will be greatly reducing their hours, days of operation, amount of withdrawals and a requirement to fill out “paperwork” if the amount is questioned by bank officials.
- Amount of withdrawal will be held to $500-2000 per day per customer account–not customer.
RB: I don’t have a crystal ball, but I have seen various reports referencing unprecedented “drills” to take place in later March and April. I’ll mention this because I know a lot of people on the inside at DHS have seen this. A document called “Operation Thunderdome.” It’s maybe 50 or 60 pages, I’m not certain. It describes an economic collapse in the U.S., followed by an attack on the government by “a made-up patriotic group.” It combines gun owners, Constitutionalists, and even Christians into an enemy group that pulls off an attack in Washington.
RB: Exactly. Maybe not just one. They have plans and back-up plans and back-ups for the back-ups. And in spite of the warnings, and history, enough people will be outraged and side with the government. This brings me to my final point. What do you think all of the prepositioning of paramilitary assets, caches of ammunition, and the opening of non-descript buildings owned or leased by the federal government are for?
It’s for you and people like you. It’s for those who are turned in by their neighbors, friends, co-workers, and others who are hungry, broke and broken. What we are about to experience will be like it was during the Civil War, only worse. People will be outgunned, surveillance will be everywhere, and it will be much more difficult to hide and fight back. Not impossible, but more difficult.
