The Next U.S. Housing Crisis Has Arrived: Existing Home Sales Post Their Biggest Decline In 4 Years

  • Things just continue to get even worse for the U.S. housing industry.  New homes sales have been absolutely plummeting, homebuilder stocks have lost over a third of their value, and existing home sales just posted their biggest decline since 2014.  For years, we had been witnessing a real estate boom in the United States, but now that has officially ended.  It is starting to feel like 2008 all over again, and many of those that work in the industry are really starting to freak out.

  • Unfortunately, buyers are rapidly disappearing from the landscape.  One recent survey discovered that just 13 percent of all Americans plan to purchase a home during the next year.  That number has declined for three consecutive quarters, and it has now fallen by nearly half over the past 12 months.

Trump, Xi signal readiness for trade talks ahead of G-20 meeting

  • U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have indicated they’re both ready for a highly anticipated meeting at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina next week. The world’s biggest economies have been engaged in an escalating trade war that is starting to have a greater impact on financial markets and global growth. On Thursday, Trump told reporters that China wants to make a deal “very badly” after his administration placed tariffs on on about $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.China “wants to make a deal and we’re very happy with that,” Trump said. “I’m very prepared, I’ve been preparing for it all my life.”
  • China hopes to meet the U.S. halfway in addressing trade issues,
  • China says reforms on the World Trade Organization should be addressed within the global trade body. Trump has repeatedly said the U.S. hasn’t been treated fairly by the organization.
  • China and Spain will chart a new road map for bilateral relations. China and Portugal will sign unspecified deals.
  • China and Argentina will sign a five-year plan for future cooperation, and Beijing will support the country’s efforts to stabilize its finances.
  • China and Panama will sign agreements in the e-commerce sectors and the service trade, and a pact for infrastructure and energy cooperation.
  • As Trump scales back America’s involvement in international trade agreements, Xi is using his signature Belt and Road trade and infrastructure program to position himself as a champion of global free trade. The initiative has extended into South America and the Caribbean, as Xi looks to expand China’s influence in the region.

  •  , BofA’s Michael Hartnett reminds his readers that Fed tightening cycles always end with financial “event” observing that much as peak liquidity in Q1 coincided with peak returns & trough volatility, “peak volatility & trough returns will coincide with Fed capitulation driven by “event” and recession fear.”

The Fed cannot agree on what they’re doing about interest rates

  • Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said recently that interest rates are a “long way from neutral” and that rates might even have to go beyond neutral. Neutral is the point where borrowing costs are neither helping nor hurting the economy.
  • But Richard Clarida, the Fed’s vice chairman, claims that rates are already close to neutral.
  • Then there is Charles Evans, who is in charge of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank. He said this week that the Fed needs to raise interest rates. Other Fed officials have also spoken up in various degrees of specificity on both sides of the issue.
  •  Fed heads are starting to take sides, they cannot agree, there is a battle forming inside the fed now between the good guys and the bad guys

  • Former FBI Director James Comey announced over Twitter on Thursday that he has been subpoenaed by House Republicans.

  • He has demanded a public testimony (during which legislators would be unable to ask him questions pertaining to classified or sensitive information), saying that he doesn’t trust the committee not to leak and distort what he says.

Comey Vows To Resist Subpoena From House Republicans For Closed-Door Testimony

  • former FBI Director James Comey announced he would “resist” the Republican subpoena for him to appear in a closed-door hearing, claiming they would “selectively leak” and “distort” his testimony.
  •   Washington Examiner’s Byron York were quick to point out the hypocrisy of Comey’s complaint about “selective leaking” given his deliberate leak to the media of his private meetings with President Trump.
  • Earlier this week, Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) slammed Comey for calling for a public hearing, claiming it would enable the former FBI Director to hide behind the excuse of not being able to answer the questions in a public setting.
  •   “Did he interview Hillary Clinton in public? Did he interview George Papadopoulos in public? Did he interview Michael Flynn in public? Did he interview Huma Abedin…Cheryl Mills? Has the FBI ever conducted an interview in public and has the FBI ever conducted an interview where you are limited to five minutes, which is what happens in Congressional hearings.”
  • The last time I saw Jim Comey in a public Congressional hearing, almost 100 times he said ‘I can’t answer in this setting,’ he continued. So why in the world would he want to go back to a setting where he knows he can’t answer all the questions? I’m sure he only wants me to have five minutes. I’m sure of that,” he said.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) confirmed in a Friday statement that he has issued subpoenas for former FBI Director James Comey and former US Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

  • The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee requests in his letter that White House chief of staff John Kelly provide information surrounding use of email that “implicates the Presidential Records Act and other security and record-keeping requirements.” Mr. Gowdy presents a December 5th deadline for a response.

Trump Doubles Down: Accuses “Obama Judge” Of Risking “Bedlam, Chaos And Death” At Southern Border

  •   Trump told reporters outside the White House that he would file a “major complaint” against an “Obama judge” (Tigar) who temporarily blocked his administration’s order to not honor any asylum claims made outside designed US border crossings.

Roberts said Wednesday the U.S. doesn’t have “Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges.” He commented in a statement released by the Supreme Court after a query by The Associated Press.

Roberts said on the day before Thanksgiving that an “independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.”

  • Trump made another crack about the Ninth Circuit during the White House’s traditional pardoning of a Thanksgiving turkey. “Unfortunately, I can’t guarantee that your pardon won’t be enjoined by the 9th Circuit. Always happens,” Trump quipped. He also blasted Roberts for his comments in a series of tweets sent Wednesday.

Grassley Has Trump’s Back On Roberts Rebuke — ‘I Don’t Recall The Chief Attacking Obama’

  •  the Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman used Twitter to jump into the fray and remind everyone that Trump wasn’t the first president to criticize a judge with regard to a ruling — even a Supreme Court ruling.
  • Grassley’s tweet likely referred to 2010, when former President Obama used his State of the Union speech to directly criticize the Supreme Court’s then-recent 5-4 ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission, a campaign finance case.

Was Supreme Court Justice John Roberts Blackmailed
  • Is that the purpose of government agencies like the IRS and the NSA that are abusing our rights – to listen to us, to watch us, to find something we’ve done wrong, and then use it to intimidate, harass, threaten or extort key political figures so that Obama can “fundamentally change America”?
  • Yet he is the man responsible for saving Obamacare – twice.

  •   Trump had authorized troops stationed at the border to act in a law enforcement capacity to “perform those military protective activities that the Secretary of Defense determines are reasonably necessary” to protect border agents, including “a show or use of force (including lethal force, where necessary), crowd control, temporary detention. and cursory search.”

US Troops at Southern Border Won’t Have Guns, Only Batons

  • Furthermore, Defense Secretary James Mattis is ruling out having any of the troops at the border armed with guns, a move intended to preclude them shooting any migrant civilians. The troops will have batons.

Geopolitical/Police State

True: Khashoggi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, WaPo carried his articles supporting them

  • The relevant passage from President Trump’s statement on Tuesday read as follows: “Representatives of Saudi Arabia say that Jamal Khashoggi was an ‘enemy of the state’ and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, but my decision is in no way based on that – this is an unacceptable and horrible crime.”
  • President Donald Trump on Thursday said that the CIA did not reach a conclusion about Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s involvement in the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, adding during a teleconference with military members that Salman “regretted the death more than I do.”
  •   a reporter asked if the CIA had a recording implicating Salman, the president responded: “I don’t want to talk about it. You’ll have to ask them.”
  • Later, he responded to a question on the crown prince’s potential involvement: “Whether he did or whether he didn’t, he denies it vehemently. His father denies, the king, vehemently. The CIA doesn’t say they did it. They do point out certain things, and in pointing out those things, you can conclude that maybe he did or maybe he didn’t.”

  • Mattis   said that neither the CIA nor the Saudi government have “fully established” who was behind the killing. And even if the CIA could find definitive proof, it wouldn’t change the fact that it’s in the US’s interest to work with the Saudis.
