Economy

Trump tweets out that the economy is roaring, jobs are setting all time records,

  • A record 157,005,000 people were employed in June, the most since February and the 19th record of Trump’s presidency, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported  on Friday.
  • And the economy added a strong 224,000 jobs in June, well above the estimate of 160,000.
  • The unemployment rate, the lowest in 50 years, ticked up a tenth of a point to 3.7 percent.
  • In June, the nation’s civilian noninstitutionalized population, consisting of all people age 16 or older who were not in the military or an institution, reached 259,037,000. Of those, 162,981,000 participated in the labor force by either holding a job or actively seeking one.
  • The 162,981,000 who participated in the labor force equaled 62.9 percent of the 259,037,000 civilian noninstitutionalized population. That’s up a tenth of a point from May’s 62.8 percent participation rate.
  • The participation rate reached a record high of 67.3 percent in early 2000; the highest it’s been under Trump is 63.2 percent.
  • President Trump hailed the strong employment report on his way out of town Friday morning:

We had great numbers this morning — I think 224,000 jobs. Those were really unexpectedly good. And our country continues to do really well — really, really well, so we’re very happy about it.

I think we are going to be breaking records. If we had a fed that would lower interest rates we’d be like a rocket ship. But we’re paying a lot of interest and it’s unnecessary. But we don’t have a Fed that knows what they’re doing. So it is one of those little things. But if we had a Fed that would lower rates, you would have a rocket ship.

When Obama, President Obama was here, he payed close to zero interest. I’m paying real interest. And yet our economy is much better than it’s ever been. From Election Day we’re over 50 percent increase, and we’ve made trillions and trillions of dollars — with a T, trillions. So we’re doing very well. But last night was spectacular….

June Jobs Figures Crush Kamala Harris’s Claim That People Are Forced to Work Multiple Jobs
  • Democrats may need to find a new line of attack against the strong labor market that has prevailed during Donald Trump’s presidency.
  • The share of working Americans holding multiple jobs fell to 4.8 percent in June, close the lowest levels on record. That is just a notch above the 4.7 percent record low hit in November 2013 through January 2014, April and May 2015, and October 2017.
  • Arguably, however, the June number is more impressive than any of those because overall employment is at a record high and unemployment much lower.
  • That hurts the credibility of Democrats like Senator Kamala Harris and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who have argued that Trump’s economy is weaker than it seems because so many Americans are forced to hold multiple jobs to make ends meet.
  • Well yeah people in America are working — they’re working two and three jobs,” Harris said on the second night of Democratic primary debates.

The Fed just got the green light to cut rates

  • The June jobs report crushed expectations. The US economy created 224,000 jobs last month and put to rest fears that had been creeping into the market about a looming recession.
  •  the June jobs actually outlines a simple reason for the Fed to cut interest rates later this month — there is still plenty of slack in the labor market.
  • Because while headline job gains in June topped expectations, wage growth missed estimates — wages rose 0.2% over the prior month and 3.1% over last year, both numbers missing the Street’s forecast by 0.1% — and the unemployment rate ticked higher on account of an increase in the labor force participation rate.
  • Both numbers are signs that the economic expansion which enters its 10th year this month continues to draw new workers into the labor pool.
  • And if the Fed’s plans to cut interest rates are aimed more at elongating this economic cycle than reacting to an economic expansion that is already rolling over, the argument in favor of reducing interest rates is straightforward.
  • A 25 basis point cut in July wouldn’t be an ‘overreaction’

What?… AOC Attacks President Trump’s Salute to America as ‘Poorly Attended’Who you gonna believe, AOC or your own crazy lyin’ eyes?

  •  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) attacked President Trump over his Salute to American Fourth of July celebration held at the Lincoln Memorial Thursday, calling the event “poorly attended”.
  • “Trump spent millions on a poorly attended, 1 day parade days after saying he couldn’t afford toothpaste & soap for caged children. Did he ask Congress for military parade💰? No. Trump held these kids hostage to secure billions for their abusers. Congress needs to see that.”
  • Screen images, photos and videos taken during the event show the area between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument was packed with attendees.

  • With regard to Ocasio-Cortez’s claim that Trump says the government can’t afford toothpaste and soap for migrant children, that too is a flat out lie. Children do get soap and toothpaste in CBP custody. The lie is based on a DOJ lawyer arguing that the government is not required to provide such items to migrant children held for a only few hours at intake as their stay is so short.

Ted Cruz Debunks Colin Kaepernick’s Out of Context Frederick Douglass Quote

  • Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) set the record straight Thursday after former NFL quarterback and national anthem protester Colin Kaepernick posted an out of context Frederick Douglass quote on Twitter for Independence Day.
  • On Independence Day, Kaepernick posted a video accompanying the following Frederick Douglass quote:

Colin Kaepernick

@Kaepernick7

“What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? This Fourth of July is yours, not mine…There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour.”
– Frederick Douglass

However, context is key. As Cruz pointed out, Douglass hated and opposed slavery, but that did not mean he hated and opposed America. Quite the contrary:

Ted Cruz

@tedcruz

You quote a mighty and historic speech by the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass, but, without context, many modern readers will misunderstand. Two critical points: https://twitter.com/Kaepernick7/status/1146826827593342977

Colin Kaepernick

“What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? This Fourth of July is yours, not mine…There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour.”
– Frederick Douglass

Ted Cruz

@tedcruz

(1) This speech was given in 1852, before the Civil War, when the abomination of slavery still existed. Thanks to Douglass and so many other heroes, we ended that grotesque evil and have made enormous strides to protecting the civil rights of everybody.

Ted Cruz

@tedcruz

(2) Douglass was not anti-American; he was, rightly and passionately, anti-slavery. Indeed, he concluded the speech as follows:

Ted Cruz

@tedcruz

“Allow me to say, in conclusion, notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented, of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country.

Ted Cruz

@tedcruz

“There are forces in operation, which must inevitably, work the downfall of slavery. ‘The arm of the Lord is not shortened,’ and the doom of slavery is certain.

Ted Cruz

@tedcruz

“I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope. While drawing encouragement from ‘the Declaration of Independence,’ the great principles it contains, and the genius of American Institutions, my spirit is also cheered by the obvious tendencies of the age.”

Ted Cruz

@tedcruz

Let me encourage everyone, READ THE ENTIRE SPEECH; it is powerful, inspirational, and historically important in bending the arc of history towards justice: https://rbscp.lib.rochester.edu/2945

  •   Douglass even referred to the Constitution as a “glorious liberty document.”
  • “Read its preamble, consider its purposes. Is slavery among them? Is it at the gateway? or is it in the temple? it is neither,” he said.
  • He continued:

While I do not intend to argue this question on the present occasion, let me ask, if it be not somewhat singular that, if the Constitution were intended to be, by its framers and adopters, a slave-holding instrument, why neither slavery, slaveholding, nor slave can anywhere be found in it.

  • It should be abundantly clear to the reader that Douglass opposed slavery but had hope that America – of all countries – could right the wrong. His hope was not misplaced.

Trump Considering Executive Order on Census Citizenship Question

  • President Donald Trump said on July 5 he is considering issuing an executive order to add a question about citizenship to the 2020 census.
  • The order is one of “four or five” options on the table, the president told reporters
  • We’ll see what happens. We could also add an addition on. So we could start the printing now and maybe do an addendum after we get a positive decision. So we’re working on a lot of things including an executive order. “
  • “We have a number of avenues we could use, all or one,” the president added.

How President Trump can use 14th Amendment to put citizenship question back on the 2020 Census

Section 2 of the 14th Amendment provides that if a state denies the franchise to anyone eligible to vote, its allotment of House seats shall be “reduced in the proportion which the number of such … citizens shall bear to the whole number of … citizens … in such state.” This language is absolute and mandatory. Compliance is impossible without counting how many citizens live in each state.

The 14th Amendment was adopted in 1868, and this provision meant to secure the voting rights of newly freed slaves. But it wasn’t limited to that purpose. An earlier version of Section 2, introduced in 1865, specifically referred to limits on suffrage based on “race or color,” but the Senate rejected that limitation. The amendment forbids state interference with the rights of all eligible voters (then limited to males over 21).

Section 2 also applies to every state, a point Rep. John Bingham, the amendment’s principal drafter, emphasized during the floor debate: “The second section … simply provides for the equalization of representation among all the States in the Union, North, South, East, and West. It makes no discrimination.”

  • Here is how the president — a man who loves winning — wins:

The president should issue an executive order stating that, to comply with the requirements of Section 2 of the 14th Amendment, the citizenship question will be added to the 2020 census. In addition, he can order the Commerce Department to undertake, on an emergency basis, a new Census Act rulemaking.

That would trigger another round of litigation. Opponents would choose a federal district court likely to block it again, and the Justice Department would have to seek the Supreme Court’s intervention during its summer recess. While rare, such an emergency review has happened before. With the justification for the citizenship question being clear and compelling, the administration should prevail.
