  • Sales decreased for a fourth time in five months despite lower mortgage rates, sustained wage gains and slower home price appreciation. February’s 11.8% spike was revised slightly lower to 11.2% MoM, but March’s existing home sales slumped 4.9% MoM (notably worse than the 3.8% drop expected).

Home purchases fell in all four regions, led by a 7.9 percent drop in the Midwest.

This is the 13th straight month of annual existing home sales declines...

  • The report adds to signs of a cooling market in March, including a government report Friday showing housing starts fell to the slowest pace since May 2017.

  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has called for the cancellation of approximately $640 billion in outstanding student loan debt which would benefit people based on income, according to Politico
  • The plan would eliminate up to $50,000 in student loan debt for anyone with under $100,000 in annual household income. This would diminish for people with incomes between $100,000 and $250,000 ($1 relief for every $3 earned), and would not be available to those making over $250,000.
  • Approximately 40 million Americans have student loans, which have ballooned to more than $1.5 trillion.

While Warren’s campaign has been in the middle of the pack in raising money and polling, she has set the pace on policy. Her steady clip of far-reaching overhauls on everything from trust-busting big tech companies to establishing a government agency to produce generic pharmaceutical drugs has been a centerpiece of the senator’s candidacy.

It is part of a pitch to convince voters that she is the most serious and prepared candidate to face off against President Donald Trump despite lingering concerns about electability after the handling of her past claims of Native American ancestry. –Politico

  • “Higher education opened a million doors for me,” Warren wrote in her Medium post. “It’s how the daughter of a janitor in a small town in Oklahoma got to become a teacher, a law school professor, a U.S. Senator, and eventually, a candidate for President of the United States.”
  • Claiming she was a Native American to open doors along her journey didn’t hurt either

Trustees Report: Social Security Fund Goes Negative In 2020, Kaput 15 Years Later

  • The Social Security program’s costs will exceed its income in 2020 for the first time since 1982—two years later than officials projected last year—forcing the program to dip into its nearly $3 trillion trust fund to cover benefits. But by 2035, those reserves will be depleted and Social Security will no longer be able to pay its full scheduled benefits, according to the latest annual report by the trustees of Social Security and Medicare released Monday.

  • Moments ago, Trump tweeted that the former Godfather’s Pizza executive – whose Fed board application was all but dead after 4 Republicans said they would oppose his nomination making his passage impossible – has requested to be removed from nomination even though just last Wednesday Cain told the WSJ that he won’t withdraw from the Fed board consideration.
  • And while Trump’s other Fed board nominee, Stephen Moore, is still in the running, his odds of being nominated are not much higher than Cain’s.

The World Economy Is A Pyramid Scheme, Steven Chu Says

  • The world economy is based on ever-increasing population, said Nobel laureate Steven Chu, a scheme that economists don’t talk about and that governments won’t face, a scheme that makes sustainability impossible and that is likely to eventually fail.
  • “The world needs a new model of how to generate a rising standard of living that’s not dependent on a pyramid scheme,” Chu said at the University of Chicago.
  • Chu didn’t specify what that new model would look like, but he offered a solution to the population growth the current one relies on.
  • “Increased economic prosperity and all economic models supported by governments and global competitors are based on having more young people, workers, than older people,” Chu said. “Two schemes come to mind. One is the pyramid scheme. The other is the Ponzi scheme. I’m not going to explain them both to you, you can look it up. But it’s based on growth, in various forms.”
  • Depending on a pyramid scheme or a Ponzi scheme, there’s no such thing as sustainability,” Chu said.
  • There are at least two problems with that:
  1. “Depending on a pyramid scheme or a Ponzi scheme, there’s no such thing as sustainability,” Chu said.
  2. As standards of living increase, population growth declines. So if the economy succeeds in raising standards of living, it undermines itself.
  • “The economists know this, but they don’t really talk about it in the open, and there’s no real discussion in government,” Chu said. “Every government says you have to have an increase in population, whether you do it through immigrants or the home population. So, this is a problem.”

Nadler Claims Don Jr. Was Offered Stolen Information In Trump Tower Meeting. That Didn’t Happen

  • New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, falsely claimed in an interview on Sunday that Donald Trump Jr. was offered stolen information in the infamous meeting at Trump Tower in June 2016.
  • “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd failed to correct Nadler when he made the inaccurate statement.
  • “I do not understand why he didn’t charge Don Jr., and others in that famous meetings with criminal conspiracy,” Nadler said of special counsel Robert Mueller in the interview.
  • “They entered into a meeting of the minds to attend a meeting, to get stolen material on Hillary. They went to the meeting. That’s conspiracy, right there,” he added.
  • Despite that claim, Trump Jr. was not offered stolen material before accepting the June 9, 2016 meeting.
  • Trump Jr. accepted the meeting after a music publicist named Rob Goldstone emailed him on June 3, 2016 saying that a Russian attorney wanted to meet with the campaign to provide information about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s possible ties to Russia.
  • Goldstone said that the lawyer “offered to provide the Trump Campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia.”
  • But nowhere did Goldstone claim that the information about Clinton was stolen.
  • It was later revealed that information contained in a memo that the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, took into the meeting was compiled by Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that was hired by the DNC and Clinton campaign to investigate Donald Trump.
  • Mueller’s team investigated the meeting, and interviewed most of the participants. But according to the report, prosecutors determined that nothing of value was exchanged in the meeting and that there was not evidence that the participants willfully broke any laws.

Trump Organization Sues House Oversight Chair Elijah Cummings to Block Subpoena

  • President Donald Trump’s legal team has sued House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) to block a subpoena for financial records from an accounting firm used by the Trump Organization.
  • In a lawsuit filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, President Trump’s attorneys write the subpoena “lacks any legitimate legislative purpose, is an abuse of power, and is just another example of overreach by the president’s political opponents.”
  • The lawsuit further accuses Cummings of failing to consult with Republicans on the panel before issuing the subpoena and says he relied on the testimony of Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, who told lawmakers in February that some of President Trump’s financial statements contained inaccuracies.

Trump Ends Waivers for Iran Oil Sanctions, Promises Oil Supply Will Remain Stable

  • The White House announced on Monday that it would terminate waivers from U.S. sanctions granted to some of Iran’s biggest oil customers, in a major step towards the administration’s goal of reducing Iranian oil exports to zero.
  • When President Donald Trump withdrew from the Iranian nuclear deal last May and restored sanctions on Iranian oil in November, he granted waivers to eight countries that purchased large quantities of Iranian oil, including several close U.S. allies. China, India, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Greece, Taiwan, and Turkey received exemptions to continue importing Iranian oil without facing penalties from the United States.
  • Most of the recipients had already reduced their purchases of Iranian oil, several made commitments to cut back even more, and three nations – Greece, Italy, and Taiwan – have reduced Iranian imports to zero.

President Trump Suggests John Kerry Violated The Logan Act Over Iran

  • President Donald Trump tweeted Monday morning that former Obama Secretary of State John Kerry might be in “big violation” of the Logan Act over his talks with Iran.
  • Trump’s tweet came after his administration announced Monday that they were ending sanctions waivers for Iranian crude oil in an effort to increase economic pressure on Iran DS
  • “Saudi Arabia and others in OPEC will more than make up the Oil Flow difference in our now Full Sanctions on Iranian Oil. Iran is being given VERY BAD advice by [Kerry] and people who helped him lead the U.S. into the very bad Iran Nuclear Deal. Big violation of Logan Act?” Trump said on Twitter.
  • Last year, Kerry reportedly had discussions with Iranian officials and several world leaders in an attempt to salvage the deal, leading some to suggest that the former Secretary of State was in violation of the Logan Act.
  • The Logan Act was signed into law by President John Adams at the genesis of the Republic in 1799. The Act prohibits “private correspondence with foreign governments,” and states that U.S. citizens cannot “directly or indirectly” have any “correspondence” with a foreign government in relation to any dispute with the United States.

Obama, Clinton, Democrats Denounce Attacks on ‘Easter Worshippers,’ Not ‘Christians’

  • Former President Barack Obama, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, and several other leading Democrats denounced terror attacks on what they called “Easter worshippers” — not Christians — Sunday in Sri Lanka.
  • Yet Obama, Clinton, and other Democrats — including 2020 presidential contender Julián Castro — could not bring themselves to identify the victims of the attacks as “Christians,” calling them “Easter worshippers” instead in eerily similar responses:
