The July 17, 2024, FBI electronic communication (obtained by Judicial Watch via FOIA) states that a female Butler County Sheriff’s deputy told investigators she “checked her emails and records and only had two email communications from CROOKS” (both on a redacted topic). She had “no personal interaction with CROOKS.”

  • There is no mention of any reply from the deputy, any outgoing emails from the sheriff’s office, or any contact initiated by the sheriff’s side. It was one-way: Crooks emailed her twice before the July 13, 2024, rally.
     
  • Judicial Watch’s press release described this as the deputy having “exchanged emails” with Crooks, which is the wording that appeared in the original X post you linked. However, the actual FBI document (which JW itself released) uses the clearer phrasing “from CROOKS” and notes she found nothing else in her records.
      

The content of the emails remains redacted, so we don’t know the topic (and the deputy didn’t recognize Crooks by name/face until after the shooting). But the records contain zero evidence that anyone at the sheriff’s office was emailing or otherwise contacting him back. The gray remote device is a remote detonator (transmitter) for the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that Thomas Matthew Crooks had built and placed in the trunk of his Hyundai Elantra.

 According to the FBI records (obtained by Judicial Watch via FOIA and referenced in Rep. Luna’s post), a Washington County SWAT officer searched Crooks’ body on the roof of the American Glass Research (AGR) building right after he was shot. The officer found:

Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel were then brought onto the roof specifically to examine this device. A police canine also alerted (“hit”) on the building, leading to an evacuation order while Crooks’ body remained there.

 Crooks had constructed two homemade IEDs (using fireworks powder and other components) and left them in his car trunk, parked nearby. Those devices had a separate receiver wired to them that was found in the “off” position. The gray remote in his pocket was the matching transmitter—he could have triggered the explosives from a distance (reports indicate capability well over 1,000–2,000 feet). FBI photos released in 2024 explicitly label the car devices as having a “receiver for remote detonation.”
