  •  2,484 IRS contractor employees owed taxes, with 1,729 not on payment plans.
  • Despite the IRS’s authority to terminate employees who willfully fail to pay taxes, only 20 of the 70 agents identified as willfully avoiding taxes were terminated. And: Between 2004 and 2024, the IRS identified 1,650 IRS employees who willfully violated tax laws.
  • Offenses included improperly claiming dependents, repeatedly failing to file timely tax returns, and falsely claiming tax credits.
  • Despite a 1998 law mandating termination for such violations, only 39% of the 1,580 employees caught evading taxes between 2004-2013 were fired, resigned, or retired, while 61% received lesser penalties such as suspensions or reprimands. This, as Democrats demanded $80B for 87,000 more agents and workers to audit you to pay for record government overspending.

  • Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te,  , indicated that the first round of trade talks with the Trump administration has gone “smoothly.” That’s a hopeful note, especially given that Taiwan is a major manufacturer of semiconductors – which are essential in the operation of almost everything these days.
  • The first round of talks between representatives of Taiwan and the U.S. was held on Friday.

  Canada has announced a temporary six-month relief from counter tariffs on U.S. goods used in manufacturing, processing, and food and beverage packaging, effective as of April 15, 2025. This measure aims to ease supply chain pressures and support Canadian industries by reducing costs for businesses reliant on these imports. The relief applies to goods that cannot be sourced domestically or reasonably from non-U.S. suppliers, and in cases where exceptional circumstances could severely impact the Canadian economy. 

 

No, A 50% Tariff Doesn’t Mean A 50% Price-Hike

  • The tariff doomsday machine is roaring again.  This time, it’s over talk of a 50% tariff on certain imports.
  • Predictably, the panic-peddlers are out in force, warning that such a tariff means retail prices will skyrocket 50%.
  •  
  •   a tariff applies to the transaction value, not the final retail price.  The transaction value is what the importer pays the exporter, plus freight and insurance.  That cost is just the first step in a long supply chain.  By the time a product reaches the consumer, it’s been marked up to cover domestic shipping, warehousing, employee wages, utilities, sales tax, and profit margins for every hand it passes through.  The tariff is just one input among many.
  • Take a simple example.
  • A retailer imports a widget with a $100 transaction value.  Add a 50% tariff, and the cost to the importer becomes $150.  That importer then sells it wholesale — perhaps at $200 — to a retailer, who marks it up again to $300 for sale.  That $50 tariff is now 16.7% of the retail price.  Even if every penny of the tariff is passed along, you’re not looking at a 50% increase in retail price — you’re looking at something closer to 17%.
  • But   tariffs are not always fully passed on to the consumer.  Importers and retailers know they can’t raise prices beyond what the market will bear.  Sometimes they absorb part of the cost, cut expenses, renegotiate contracts, or shift to different suppliers.  The market reacts; it doesn’t just lie down and take it.
  •  Look at the real-world data.
  • The National Bureau of Economic Research analyzed the 2018–2019 U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods.  They found that for every 10% tariff, retail prices rose 1–2%.  So even a 50% tariff, if applied, might cause retail prices to edge up 5–10% — not 50%.  That’s a far cry from the alarmist headlines.

Arkansas Senate passes bill allowing gold to be used as a transactional currency for state matters

  • The Arkansas state Senate on Monday unanimously approved a bill that would allow the state to store gold and silver in a depository, which would be used as backing for electronic transactions.

  • The House bill, which has now passed both chambers, still needs to be signed by Arkansas GOP Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders. If Sanders does sign the bill, Arkansas would be the first state to formally accept gold and silver as electronic state currency.
  • A similar bill passed the Utah legislature, but was vetoed by Gov. Spencer Cox last week. Sanders is expected to sign the measure.

DHS to Revoke Temporary Protected Status for Afghans, Cameroonians in US

  • Thousands of Afghans and Cameroonians living in the United States will have their temporary protected status (TPS) revoked in the coming months, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Monday.
  • DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has terminated TPS designations for Afghanistan and Cameroon as she determined that the countries’ current conditions no longer warrant protections, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in an emailed statement to The Epoch Times.
  • The decision will affect about 14,600 Afghans, who are set to lose their legal status in May, and approximately 7,900 Cameroonians, whose protected status will expire by June.

Envoy Steve Witkoff Gives Topline Review Following 5 Hour Meeting with Vladimir Putin

  • President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to St Petersburg (interesting venue), and spent approximately 5 hours in discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his top two advisors. 
  • First, President Putin would never give this much time to a non-principal in any geopolitical conversation, unless Putin felt he was directly talking to the principal through the voice in front of him.  In essence, Trump has told Putin that Witkoff is his mouth and ears,  the envoy of President Trump noted both Putin and Trump understand the core issues and are aligned to solve the problem despite the CIA and SSCI efforts to keep wedging them apart.  Additionally, Trump and Putin see a future where geopolitical and economic alignment can be very beneficial for both Russia and the United States; they just need to find a way to navigate the complex politics on the U.S/NATO side of the mess.
