Nazis are fascists and, based on Marxist ideology. Communism (as well as socialism), an ideology that long pre-dated Marx, is often wrongly credited to him. In the 19th century, it did absorb a great deal of the Marxist perspective, but to be specific, that is better described as soviet-socialism; even if followers do self-identify as communist/communism. The differences between fascists and communists (Marx was a very typical racist and even regarded Russians as sub-human) is very minor and nearly impossible to distinguish. For example; China, self described as communist, but is in reality, a fascist state. Nazis as ‘far-leftists’… obviously!

The article is titled, ‘Why I no longer stand with Israel, and never will again’.
Yet, that article is not pro-Hamas, nor is it anti-Israel. It is rather, pro-humanity, and strange as it may seem to some, Palestinians are seen as humans.
My response to his article:
Thank you, Scott. It’s good to know that the moral sense of a retired military man was not set in the concrete of what he’d ‘always thought’ and felt in the past.
Unlike you, there are some I preferred to respect, but no longer can due to a mindless, knee jerk call to “support Israel” no matter what Israel has done or will do, who are so sure they already understand every motivation and cause that they will not open their eyes and look at the true context of these tragic events.
I understood enough of the history of the origin of the state of Israel and today’s context, not to be swept up in the one-sided reportage of another “unprovoked” attack. I do not approve at all of Hamas. (Yet, I frankly must wonder how much of the reportage of atrocities is untrue.)
I recall My Lai, when young men, arguably considerably less provoked than any young resident of Gaza, committed atrocities. I know that too many Vietnam veterans have nightmares, not due to what they saw, but what they did when not in their right minds.
Fear, hatred, hopelessness can all derange a mind and deform the moral sense.
But those who arranged for this scenario, in the deep background, did it cold-bloodedly, in calculation.
I have said, years past, that the state created in Palestine ought not to have been called “Israel”, but “Rothschildia”.
Nevertheless, I am in no way hostile to Israelis born there, obviously through no fault of their own. They have no other home. And some, maybe most, original settlers went there with no harm to natives in their minds and hearts.
It is clear that perfect justice can never be accomplished. Many exiled Palestinians have died, dispossessed. And their children or grandchildren cannot simply “return” home to what was taken from their families.
The UN never had a right to grant a state to an alien people, ignoring natives, the true owners, and self-determination, also ignoring the atrocities committed by the nascent state before it was recognized as somehow legitimate. Israel was born in terrorism. That is just history. The same is true of the US, as any native could tell you.
But Israel was also born in the dreams of people who sought a holy land, a land romanticized perhaps through religious conviction or a simple desire for a safe home.
But God never counseled genocide, no matter what any books say. And a safe home is not best won by theft and murder.
If one’s ancestors did lived in a specific land, and then had gone “walkies” for 2000 years for whatever reason, one cannot reasonably walk back in, and now dispossess others who have lived in that land for centuries. What right allows anyone to take homes and olive orchards from them?
You must be a religious fanatic of the worst sort, honoring a god more akin to a demon than a Creator, to imagine it. God is not a genocidal realtor. Aside from that, European Jews are not even descendants of people of Palestine. But even if they were, no rational person could say they had a right to that land.
But now, if born Israelis were to be expelled from Israel’s legal borders (despite the ‘legal’ travesty that designated those borders), just as Palestinian Arabs were, instead of perfect justice, there would only be more, newly created victims.
They have to determine, together, a way forward to peace and the most just settlement and compensations they can agree to. Palestinians and Israelis must do this.
I believe there are enough decent Israelis and Palestinians to accomplish that.
But I feel disheartened that radicals, on either side, seem to easily derail efforts at peace and justice.
Years ago, I read a book by Israeli reporter, Amira Haas, ‘Drinking the Sea at Gaza’. It is dated, but still pertinent. She had gone to Gaza to cover a story, and stayed. She found the hearts of Palestinian people, who she came naturally to love for their warmth and humanity.
And I came to love and admire her, for hers, and for her courage to open her eyes and see.
Reading her book afforded me a first opportunity to recognize that not all Israelis are heartless, unfeeling monsters who like to see Palestinians die.
I came to an understanding of this conflict from the other direction opposite to yours.
I had to come to recognize that goodness and love of life, including the lives of “others”, also reside in the minds and hearts of Israelis and Jews.
In time, I came to see Israelis much as we in America are, ruthlessly propagandized to see all things askew, desensitized for the benefit of what is called the ‘deep state’.
The state of Israel, under its current leaders, is not interested in the well being of Israelis, no more than in the well being of Palestinians.
I don’t know how people can leave behind their mutual oppressors, come together, and create peace and a safe home for all.
But I do pray that they can and do. God willing.
I expect, Scott, that you, with your prominent voice, will be reviled for your statement, though it is not against Israel. The propaganda press has an agenda of division of peoples.
Low information types will condemn your stance and you.
For my part, after the disappointment I have now experienced in respect of others I won’t name, I salute you and your honor.
I don’t know the future, how our world thrives or perhaps ends in whimpers. But you are a reminder, “It isn’t whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.” Or as the Gita is more elegant, in translation, “Do whatsoever thou doest, without attachment.”
Regardless of potential hard outcomes, you do the right thing, your duty as you see it. There is, then, at least one man I can admire without embarrassment. Scott, thank you.
