Cyberattack hits India’s largest bank, exposes customer records

  •  State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender by assets, has launched a probe after a suspected cyberattack exposed thousands of customer records containing personal information onto the dark Web.

  • Conspiracy (18 U.S.C. § 371 and related statutes): Agreements to commit federal crimes, including assault on federal officers, destruction of property, arson, or civil disorder.
  • Material support to terrorism or related offenses (18 U.S.C. §§ 2339A, 2339B, 2339C, etc.): Providing resources, training, personnel, or funds knowing they will be used for specific violent or terrorist acts. These require a clear nexus to criminal violence, not general political disagreement.
  • RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act): When funding or coordination is part of a pattern of racketeering activity. Proposed expansions (such as the Stop FUNDERs Act) would make interstate rioting a RICO predicate, making it easier to reach organizers and funders of repeated violent events.
  • Money laundering, wire fraud, and related financial crimes: When funds are moved with knowledge they support criminal activity.
