The Electoral College has always been the way the elections are done. Regardless of the popular national popular vote. The dems want states to adopt rules that make the states vote electorally for the national popular vote winner. Most republican presidents in the last 25 years have lost the national popular vote, so Trump was t doing anything especially new in 2016 or 2020 with regard to getting electoral votes.
