German car industry issues energy-price warning  

  • The future of Germany’s car production is at risk due to “toxic” energy prices, the president of the Association of the Automotive Industry, Hildegard Muller, has warned.
  • Germany “is losing dramatically its international competitiveness” as the location for the automobile industry because of soaring energy costs, Muller stated in an interview with the head of Microsoft Germany, Marianne Janik, on Monday.
  • Other countries are becoming more attractive for important industries such as battery or semiconductor manufacturing, which is a worrisome message for Germany amid an already unfavorable economic situation in the country, she said.
  • According to Muller, soaring energy prices have become “toxic” for the country’s medium-sized suppliers. They warn that investment will no longer flow into Germany but instead will shift away to other EU countries or to the US.

Immigrants are joining the U.S. workforce at much higher levels than normal.

  • They’re likely to account for roughly half a million new jobs over the next three quarters, per a new report from Goldman Sachs.

Why it matters: As the U.S. continues to struggle with a historically-tight labor market, immigrants are coming to the rescue of desperate employers — while also creating new jobs themselves.

By the numbers: Between the pre-pandemic month of January 2020 and July 2023, the immigrant labor force grew by 9.5%. That compares to a tiny 1.5% growth rate among the native-born.

  •   foreign-born workers are, in fact, working, with their participation rate at 67% compared to actual Americans, who are at 62.2%. Third, baby boomers are retiring, and younger people are more likely to be foreign-born.
  •   1.2 million Americans lost their jobs  . Of those 1.2 million lost jobs, foreign workers replaced 771,000 of them.
  •  But it appears that 1.2 million Americans wanted to work, but their employers didn’t want them. Instead, a great many employers preferred 771,000 foreign-born workers.

Federal revenue falls $416 billion from this time last year despite passage of IRA

  • Budget experts say the revenue raising portions of the IRA still haven’t taken full effect and when they do, the cost of the law’s energy tax credits will likely drown them out. 
  • Federal revenue dropped $416 billion compared to this time last year, according to recently released U.S. Treasury Department data, despite the Democrats’ passage of their $780 billion Inflation Reduction Act last year.
  • The legislation, which President Biden signed in August 2022, contained a 15% minimum corporate income tax, which still hasn’t been fully implemented by the IRS.
  • Scott Hodge, president of the Tax Foundation, said hat some of the tax credits in the IRA, like the clean vehicle credit and solar tax credit, are in effect right now and will cost billions. “In the short term, the IRA is generating little new revenue because of the delays in implementing the 15% minimum tax so the green energy credits are costing taxpayers billions,” he said.

US Hosted Taiwanese Troops For Massive Joint Exercise In Michigan 

  • Southeast Asian regional sources have revealed Monday that Taiwanese troops attended a rare joint exercises with the US military on American soil this summer.
  • It happened last month in Michigan, Taipei Times reports, and ran from August 5th to the 19th, and involved some 7,000 combined personnel. The US side was chiefly represented by the Michigan National Guard, and reportedly not troops overseen directly by the Pentagon.
  • Dubbed “Northern Strike”, the entire joint battalion of the Taiwan’s 333rd Infantry Brigade was sent to Michigan, and it’s a sign that more such US-based exercises could be on the horizon.

  •  Sen. JD Vance will introduce legislation   to crackdown on the ability by the federal government or commercial airlines to force Americans into wearing face masks amid a string of new coronavirus variants.
