So, it’s especially worrying that the ‘it’s different this time’ narrative is coming from none other than the world’s most important central bank, the US Federal Reserve.
- Through the past 75 years, the US unemployment rate has either not gone up meaningfully, or it has gone up by a lot. The US unemployment rate has never gone up by ‘just’ 1 percent. Yet when asked at last week’s press conference if the cost of killing inflation could be kept to the unemployment rate going up by ‘just’ 1 percent, Jay Powell answered:
- “Yeah, absolutely it’s possible… this is not a standard business cycle where you can look at the last ten times there was a global pandemic… it is unique”
- The Sequence Of Events Leading To Recession Is Always The Same
- The backdrop to every business cycle is ‘different this time’. But the chain reaction that takes the economy into recession is always the same.
- First, sales decline relative to wages.
- Second, firms’ profits plunge.
- Third, firms lay off workers.
- Fourth, at a tipping-point of a 0.5-0.6 percent rise in the unemployment rate, consumers take fright and increase their precautionary saving, and banks slow their lending.
- Fifth, this further slowdown in spending is the self-reinforcement which causes the unemployment rate to go up by at least 2 percent. Meaning, a recession.
- This chain reaction explains why the US unemployment rate is non-linear: it either doesn’t go up meaningfully, or it goes up a lot. If the chain reaction breaks down before stage four, then unemployment doesn’t rise meaningfully, but if the chain reaction gets to stage four, then unemployment rises a lot.
- The latest employment data shows that the US jobs market remains red hot, but this should come as no surprise. To repeat, firms only lay off workers after their profits plunge. Not before. So far, the chain reaction is only at stage two. Sales are declining relative to wages, but economy-wide profits have not declined enough to trigger widespread layoffs.

Georgia Supreme Court Allows Appeal Of Ballot Bar-Code Cases Dismissed By Three Superior Courts
- Judges in Cobb, Fulton and Bullock Counties had previously dismissed cases brought forward alleging improper ballots, in part because the ballots contain non-human readable bar-codes.
- February 9th 2023 – Atlanta – the Georgia Supreme Court has issued an order allowing appeal of three cases filed in various superior courts challenging the validity of the ballots used during the December 6th 2022 runoff.
- During the runoff election, three separate plaintiffs filed cases in three superior county courts in Georgia, alleging that the ballots created during voting included bar codes, do not comply with Georgia law and were implemented in violation of Georgia law for regarding election procedures and processes.
- The Supreme Court’s ruling now allows these dismissals to be challenged on appeal and for the court to consider whether the one or more of the cases should be returned to a lower court for reconsideration.
- The fact that ballots created by Dominions Systems include non-human readable barcodes has been a source of continued debate as Georgia law requires that all ballots be human readable.

- A major Biden ally is also a top donor to the National Archives. Could private equity billionaire David Rubenstein hold the key to the White House documents scandal?
- At the center of the Biden document cover-up is the question of who blocked the National Archives and Records Administration from informing the U.S. public about the classified records found in the president’s office in early November. The archives’ general counsel told members of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability that he couldn’t divulge that information, but GOP House leadership concluded that only Attorney General Merrick Garland or Biden himself could have given those orders.
- But there’s a third powerful name in play, this one from outside of the government: David Rubenstein. Co-founder of the Washington, D.C.-based private equity firm the Carlyle Group, Rubenstein is one of the archives’ most generous patrons. In 2013, the David M. Rubenstein Gallery at the National Archives was completed at a cost of $13.5 million. Rubenstein is also a major Biden ally. He has regularly hosted the Biden family at his Nantucket estate for Thanksgiving—in 2022, 2021, and 2014.
- Indeed, Biden’s friend Rubenstein appears to exercise considerable influence over the staffing of senior personnel at the agency. Before Ferreiro was appointed by Barack Obama in 2009 to lead the National Archives, he was the university librarian and vice provost for library affairs at Duke University from 1996 to 2004, at the same time that Rubenstein was chair of the Duke Board of Trustees. The nominee to replace Ferreiro at the archives, Colleen Shogan, is also affiliated with Rubenstein. She is currently the director of the David M. Rubenstein Center at the White House Historical Center.
- The National Archives is supposed to be above the political fray, an institution dedicated to preserving historical records.
- Like other top Biden allies, Rubenstein has long been bullish on the Chinese Communist Party. “China has a very bright economic outlook,” Rubenstein told a Davos audience in 2022. “We will continue to invest there.” A 2019 Wall Street Journal report showed that Rubenstein’s Carlyle Group helped Beijing evade U.S. export controls to purchase satellites that help network People’s Liberation Army troops, boost CCP propaganda broadcasts, and allow Chinese authorities to put down protests in Xinjiang, where the party has detained more than a million Muslims, mostly from the Turkic-speaking Uyghur population, in forced labor and reeducation camps.

- It is unclear what information Special Counsel Jack Smith is seeking from Mike Pence.
- ABC News reported:
- The special counsel investigation was supposed to focus on whether Trump broke the law when he took White House records to Mar-a-Lago and the other part of the probe is related to January 6.
- However, Jack Smith has now expanded his investigation and is looking into Trump’s efforts to fight the massive 2020 election fraud operation in key swing states.
- In December it was reported that Jack Smith subpoenaed Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin officials for their communications with Trump in his effort to contest the 2020 election.
- Jack Smith also issued subpoenas to secretaries of state in Michigan and Arizona as he expands his fishing expedition.
- The subpoenas were issued to Soros-backed Jocelyn Benson and Katie Hobbs as part of Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s effort to contest the 2020 election.
