Trump floats US sovereign wealth fund as part of economic pitch

  •  Trump in a speech to business leaders  called for the creation of a U.S. sovereign wealth fund, a government-owned investment fund, to finance “great national endeavors.”
  • While offering few details, Trump said the fund would would yield a “gigantic profit” that could help “pay down the national debt” — an unmet goal from his 2016 campaign.
  • Sovereign wealth funds are prevalent throughout the industrialized and developing world, with the largest ones residing in oil-rich states like Norway, Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf nations as well as China, Singapore and Hong Kong.
  • “Why don’t we have a wealth fund? Other countries have wealth funds. We have nothing,” Trump said during his speech to The Economic Club of New York, adding that the U.S. fund would be financed by tariffs “and other intelligent things.”
  • According to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute, roughly 100 funds currently manage nearly $13 trillion in assets. That includes a handful of U.S. states including Alaska, Texas, New Mexico and others which have set up their own types of government-run funds initially financed by oil, gas and mineral resources. Trump now wants to do the same at the federal level.

  • In general, sovereign wealth funds usually have a targeted purpose. Some countries have sovereign wealth funds that can be similar to venture capital for the private sector.
  • Similar to any type of investment fund, SWFs have their own objectives, terms, risk tolerances, liability matches, and liquidity concerns. Some funds may prefer returns over liquidity and vice versa. Depending on the assets and objectives, sovereign wealth funds’ risk management can range from very conservative to a high tolerance for risk.

  • Georgia school shooter Colt Gray was bullied by classmates who called him gay, his father told detectives in an interview last year.
  • Colin Grey, 54, made the claims when he was interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff’s office after the FBI received a tip that his son had threatened a shooting at his middle school.

  • A Wake County judge has ruled against Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s attempt to be removed from North Carolina presidential ballots, finding that the harm Kennedy would suffer would be small compared to that facing the state Board of Elections, although the judge granted Kennedy a 24-hour stay to appeal.

  • Voting season was supposed to kick off on Friday in North Carolina, until a state court intervened over Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s place on the ballot. 
  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr. won an appeal over having his name removed from the state’s presidential ballot on Friday, delaying the expected mailing of the state’s absentee ballots on Friday.
  • It’s unclear if this ruling, which reverses a lower court’s denial, will be appealed. But it will at least temporarily delay the distribution of mail ballots.
  • As a third-party presidential candidate, Kennedy had fought to secure ballot access in North Carolina. But after he dropped out of the race and endorsed former President Donald Trump, he sought to remove himself as an option for voters, as polling indicates his presence on the ballot could hurt the Republican nominee.

Vos could have immediately proceeded to impeach Wolfe, but he didn’t. Wisconsin voters voted these RINOS back into office. Exclusive: US sees increasing risk of Russian ‘sabotage’ of key undersea cables by secretive military unit 

  • The US has detected increased Russian military activity around key undersea cables, and believes Russia may now be more likely to carry out potential sabotage operations aimed at disabling a critical piece of the world’s communications infrastructure, two US officials told CNN.
  • Russia has put increasing emphasis on building up a dedicated military unit, which deploys a formidable fleet of surface ships, submarines and naval drones, according to one of the officials. The unit, the “General Staff Main Directorate for Deep Sea Research,” is known by its Russian acronym GUGI.
  • “We are concerned about heightened Russian naval activity worldwide and that Russia’s decision calculus for damaging US and allied undersea critical infrastructure may be changing,” a US official told CNN. “Russia is continuing to develop naval capabilities for undersea sabotage mainly thru GUGI, a closely guarded unit that operates surface vessels, submarines and naval drones.”
