SNAP Benefits Scammer Wanted by the FBI Caught in India After Fleeing US 

  • Accused scammer Manjit Singh Bedi was arrested in India on Friday after fleeing the .
  • The FBI has been in contact with authorities in India to help with his arrest, while also collaborating with them to have him sent back to the United States.
  • Bedi is the fifth person to be arrested by the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters initiative. The initiative focuses on fugitives tied to financial crimes.

 “Launched in June, the initiative has led to the arrests of five fugitives whom the FBI says are collectively accused of more than $2 billion in alleged fraud after spending nearly 4,000 combined days on the run,” Fox News reported.

  • According to federal authorities, Bedi is alleged to have committed fraud against the US government by stealing a minimum of $600,000 in SNAP benefits in 2024 and 2025. This occurred while he was running a grocery store in Tacoma, Washington.

President Trump’s Plan

 commenting on this sorry phenomenon at length in recent days, and one comment I see over and over is this question: “Why are we not prosecuting the press?” The answer is….. complex. I wrote the below article to answer that question at a very high level. It’s not a law journal article, it’s just an explanation of the issues at a strategic level for those who might not be familiar with this complex legal landscape. Please read, if you are so inclined. It’s about 1,500 words.

Why prosecutions still almost never happenThe author lists six practical reasons administrations usually decline to charge journalists:

  1. Public-relations blowback — Charging a reporter turns them into a First Amendment martyr.
  2. Discovery risk — A trial would likely force disclosure of still more classified information.
  3. Scope problem — If one outlet publishes the leak and others repeat it, prosecutors face pressure to charge everyone.
  4. Legal uncertainty — Courts might still strike down a prosecution on First Amendment grounds; no administration has wanted to lose that test case.
  5. Better target — Going after the government leaker is simpler, cheaper, and more effective at deterring future leaks.
  6. Who counts as a “journalist”? — In 1971 the category was relatively clear (established newspapers). In 2026 anyone with a social-media account can publish. If the First Amendment protection is limited only to “professional” journalists, that itself raises constitutional problems, because the Press Clause was written for all Americans, not just owners of printing presses. If everyone is a journalist, then almost no one can be prosecuted for publishing classified material.

In short: the press is not legally immune from prosecution after publication. It is protected from being stopped before publication, and governments have almost always chosen not to test the remaining criminal statutes for political, practical, and definitional reasons.

 Jim Jordan on Wednesday demanded the FBI turn over all evidence related to a counterintelligence operation during the 2020 election codenamed “Round River” that classified President Donald Trump’s own administration officials and political allies as “conduits” of Russian disinformation. 

The letter from Jordan to FBI Director Kash Patel was prompted by the first substantive revelations about the Round River operation contained in declassified documents made public last month by the White House Government Transparency Task Force. 

“The Committee on the Judiciary is conducting oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) operation, codenamed Round River, during the 2020 presidential election. Recently released information reveals that the operation categorized prominent Republicans and conservative organizations as ‘conduits’ of Russian disinformation, while certain Democrats such as President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, were ‘targets’ of such disinformation,” Jordan wrote. 

“In response to this information, you issued a statement suggesting that Round River was used as political lawfare to suppress evidence tying the Biden family to corruptive business dealings with Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, rather than offering a complete picture of potential foreign threats,” he continued. “We appreciate your continued transparency, and we write to request additional information regarding Round River.”
