Media Bias: Wildfires Caused by Arson, Not Climate Change

  • Several high-profile American wildfires over the past decade were initially framed in media coverage around drought and climate change before investigators determined the fires were deliberately set. A review of seven cases shows a recurring pattern: early coverage emphasizes heat, drought, or “climate crisis” language, followed later by an arson arrest that shifts the cause to a specific individual.
  • In some cases, reports on social media initially framed the suspect as a conservative, but it later turned out the suspect was a liberal or climate activist. However, the conservative community is still waiting for an apology.
  • The most recent example is the Old Trails Fire in Spokane County, Washington, which ignited August 1, 2026. Early coverage, including CNN’s live updates, used “climate crisis” language, and the Associated Press described the fires as erupting “across a parched landscape” amid severe drought and low snowpack.
  • Climate activists and social media accounts ran with the climate crisis narrative. However, on August 3, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office arrested Aaron F. Farinacci, 37, on suspicion of first-degree arson.

 

  • Farinacci had a history of violence. He was originally charged with first-degree murder in the 2010 killing of his father in Maricopa County, Arizona. That charge was dismissed following a grand jury indictment, and he pleaded guilty in 2012 to manslaughter and aggravated assault.
  • He was found in possession of waterproof matches and a butane lighter near the fire’s ignition point and had previously been questioned about “arson-related behavior” in the area, though never charged.
  • The Palisades Fire, which began on January 7, 2025, in Los Angeles, was likewise discussed in climate terms, with CNN reporting a climate expert’s prediction that it would become one of the costliest wildfires in U.S. history. While the fire may ultimately prove to be the costliest in history, that prediction had nothing to do with climate.
  •  
  • On October 7, 2025, federal authorities arrested Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29. According to the DOJ press release, two passengers whom Rinderknecht drove as an Uber driver on the night of December 31, 2024, told investigators he appeared agitated and angry. They also said he parked near the Skull Rock Trailhead and walked up the trail before the fire ignited.
  • No mainstream outlet that linked the Palisades Fire to climate change in its early coverage has issued a correction or apology for that framing after Rinderknecht was charged with arson.
  • Canada’s Quebec wildfires of 2023 followed a similar arc. Widespread media coverage attributed the fires to climate change, and a 2023 report by the Climate Action Against Disinformation coalition tracked disinformation campaigns disputing that link.
  • Brian Paré, who had posted conspiracy theories claiming the Canadian government was intentionally starting fires to build support for climate policy, pleaded guilty in January 2024 to 13 counts of arson and one count of arson with disregard for human life. He admitted to starting 14 fires himself.
  • According to prosecutor Marie-Philippe Charron, Paré told investigators that his main motivation was testing whether the forest was dry enough to burn.  
  • The 2018 Holy Fire in Orange County, California, burned 23,000 acres and destroyed 18 structures. Forrest Gordon Clark, the property owner accused of setting the fire, was acquitted of the arson charges in 2023. However, he was convicted of making criminal threats against a neighbor.
  • According to a 2018 court filing, a prosecutor said Clark “appears to believe in the Sovereign Citizen ideology.” The Southern Poverty Law Center reported that Clark had been a member of a sovereign citizen group and that his Facebook page contained posts referencing the New World Order, the Illuminati, and Agenda 21.
  • The 2018 Cranston Fire in Riverside County, California, burned more than 13,000 acres. Brandon McGlover was originally charged with 15 felony counts related to nine fires allegedly set on July 25, 2018.
  • According to a Riverside County District Attorney’s Office press release, prosecutors amended the charges after testimony at the preliminary hearing showed the evidence did not support proving specific intent to burn structures. McGlover pleaded guilty in February 2019 to two counts of burning a structure or forest land. Seven other counts were dismissed under the plea agreement.

  • A federal judge handed the Trump administration a major, though incomplete, victory Monday, temporarily blocking New York from enforcing laws that required ICE agents and other federal law-enforcement officers to uncover their faces and display visible identification while performing their duties.
  • U.S. District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino, a Barack Obama appointee, ruled that the Justice Department was likely to prevail on its argument that New York had directly regulated the federal government in violation of the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause.
  • “New York cannot impose its own uniform requirements on federal agents simply because it disagrees with how the Federal Government is exercising its authority,” D’Agostino wrote in the 51-page court order.
  • D’Agostino added, “Defendants may be correct that federal immigration officers wearing masks and not displaying viable identification creates certain dangerous situations that the Face Covering and Identification Acts remedy. ‘But that argument is addressed to the wisdom of the federal policy.   • Spain has demonstrated precisely why government is so often the source of the crisis rather than the solution. The Sánchez government issued a sweeping royal decree to legalize hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants, bypassed Parliament, and then acted astonished when people outside Spain interpreted the message exactly as any rational person would: enter the country illegally today and the politicians may legalize you tomorrow.
  • The decree did not explicitly state that every migrant arriving by boat would automatically receive legal status. It applied to undocumented migrants who could prove that they had lived in Spain for at least five months before January 1, 2026, but leave it to government to hide the fine print. Then Spain’s Supreme Court restricted the immediate expulsion of migrants arriving by sea. Smugglers and social-media accounts distorted that ruling into a promise that anyone who entered Spanish territory through the water could not be sent back, and Madrid failed miserably to contain or correct the message before people began moving. The outcome was entirely predictable.
  • Pedro Sánchez suddenly denounced the crossing as an attack on Spain’s territorial integrity. The same government that issued a mass regularization decree and promoted itself as Europe’s humanitarian alternative suddenly discovered that a nation must have a border.

At some point, the person above him decides that’s too much power for one subordinate to hold and removes him before he becomes a rival. Neither reason is comfortable. Both mean the same thing operationally. The purge has reached the top of its own apparatus. That’s a phase marker. When a cleanup operation starts consuming its own enforcers, you’re not at the beginning anymore. You’re at the point where the machine has done most of what it was built to do, and now the question becomes who gets to hold the machine. Watch for this pattern in other places.

It’s one of the clearest signals that a phase is ending.

The FBI has confirmed it is leading the investigation after multiple Michigan water systems reported cyber intrusions. According to state officials, nine municipal water systems in Michigan have been affected, though the communities involved have not been publicly identified.

  • Banks must file a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN, part of the U.S. Treasury) if they detect a transaction or pattern involving $5,000 or more that they know, suspect, or have reason to suspect involves money laundering, funds from illegal activity, or other potential violations of law.

  • In urgent cases (for example, ongoing money-laundering schemes), banks are also required to immediately notify an appropriate law enforcement authority by telephone in addition to filing the SAR.

  • Closing an account is a separate risk-management decision. There is no legal requirement to close accounts after filing a SAR, and no requirement to “refer” a case to the DOJ for prosecution.

 Timeline

  • March 8, 2021: Capital One notified the Trump Organization and related entities that it intended to close more than 300 accounts.
  • June 7, 2021: Original scheduled closure date (about three months’ notice).
  • Capital One granted several extensions beyond June 7.
  • The accounts were ultimately closed in mid-2021.

The banking relationship with Capital One ended at that point. The Trump entities moved their funds to other banks, and the accounts have remained closed ever since.  

 Just think for a moment the power it took to get these two, who are on record being anti Trump and swearing they will be against all things Trump, to cave within a day or so.

 

People are complaining about high food prices, high gas prices,  this goes far beyond just bringing prices down a couple of cents so people feel good. This about dismantling the controls that were put into place to cause these problems in the first place. The prices will fall dramatically right before the midterms so its fresh when they go to the polls.
