Investors and consumers think the U.S. will recover faster from the coronavirus than economists
- Investors and consumers evidently have more faith the U.S. will rebound quickly from the coronavirus pandemic than the experts on the economy.
- The two longest running surveys of consumer confidence compiled by the Conference Board and University of Michigan both experienced record declines in April, but they also showed that consumers think the economy will be significantly improved six months from now.
- the consumer confidence index is still well above its historic low of 25.3 in February 2009 during the Great Recession. Despite the record plunge in confidence in April, consumers don’t expect a deep coronavirus-induced recession to last that long.
- Most economists — members of the famed “dismal science” — don’t seem to share the view of investors and consumers.

Mnuchin warns big companies of criminal penalties over small business loans
- Mnuchin said the Small Business Administration planned to do a “full review” of any loans above $2 million before the loans are forgiven
- Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced new plans to scrutinize the largest recipients of emergency small business loans and signaled potential criminal penalties if big companies misrepresented their financial situation to secure the money.
- “The purpose of this program was not social welfare for big business,” he said. “The purpose of this program was to help small businesses.”
- Shake Shack, Ruth’s Hospitality Group and other well-known publicly traded companies were among the corporations that received loans before the first wave of funding ran out on April 16. Many have started to return the money amid pressure from the Trump administration and the public.

Flynn’s Former Lawyers Covington And Burling Turn Over Another Trove Of Docs, Again
- Covington and Burling LLP, the former defense team for former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, turned over thousands of more pages of documents to Flynn’s new defense team that should have been submitted more than a year ago. Judge Rules That Virginia Governor’s Gun Range Shut Down is Against the Law
- A Virginia judge has ruled that Democrat governor Ralph Northam’s closure of indoor gun ranges due to the coronavirus violates gun right laws in the state.
- Judge F. Patrick Yeatts of the 24th Judicial Circuit of Virginia ruled in favor of Lynchburg Range & Training, which challenged Northam’s shutdown order in the court.
