Having watched a clip by Geert Vanden Bossche in the spring of 2021 (a renowned vaccine specialist) my understanding is that the variants are real but the vaccinated no longer have the antibodies to fight the variants. Their immune systems have been compromised. And this is why rising covid cases are including so many vaccinated people.
I suspect this is the angle. ie. They want the virus to come back in a big way, blame the unvaccinated and shut down the economy again.
