The Internet cannot be crippled by a solar flare. I’ve been working as an internet engineer since 1993. We always build in redundant paths. Say you send an e-mail from New York to L.A. Your message might go via fiber optic first to Buffalo, and then make several hops through Chicago, Des Moines, Emporia Kansas and eventually arrive in L.A. If there is high traffic on the link from NY to Buffalo, then your message might go south to Florida before heading west. The number of possible routes is countless, and optical fiber is naturally immune to electromagnetic interference. from sunspots and solar flares. AT&T engineers worked all this out around 1947. Each router along the trip decides which router will get the message next based on current traffic loads and which lines still have a pulse.
