Electric Vehicle Charging in Oslo, Norway is Now More than Twice as Expensive as Filling Gas-Powered Vehicle

  • It is now more than twice as expensive to charge an electric vehicle in Norway’s capital, Oslo, than to fill up a gas-powered vehicle.
  • It was reported in the local newspaper Avisa Oslo that the price of Oslo’s municipal electric car chargers rose dramatically after the city’s budget was approved last week.
  • As of 2019, the local government began charging citizens for charging their electric vehicles. The prices ranged from 5 to 15 kroner per hour ($2) based on the charger’s output in kilowatts and the time of day, according to The Local.
  • The charges for the normal late-night and overnight charging have increased by seven times in less than four years.
  • Now, the Oslo government increased the charging of electric vehicles from NOK 28 to NOK 49 (USD 2.80-4.90) an hour for “normal” recharging during the day and NOK 13 to NOK 39 (USD 1.31-3.94) at night.

New Poll Shows Just How Much Americans are Willing to Pay to ‘Fight Climate Change’ 

  • A majority of voters are unwilling to pay more than $10 out of their own pockets monthly to mitigate climate change, according to a poll released Friday.
  • Over 40% of respondents said that they would not pay a single dollar of their own money each month to reduce the impact of climate change while only 17% said they would be willing to spend $10 or less, according to a CRC Advisors poll conducted for the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a libertarian think tank. About 25% of young voters (ages 18-24) aren’t willing to pay anything to combat climate change and 30% would only be willing to spend an additional $1 to $20 monthly, while 48% of voters ages 25-34 would not spend more than an additional $10 per month.

 California Is Impossible For The Middle Class

  • The fact is California is difficult, often impossible, to live in if you’re in the middle class. The wealthy can afford to live here, although they often leave too, because that 13.3 percent top income tax rate really digs in, especially when they dream of moving to 0 percent Texas, Florida, or Nevada. The poor suffer, but California has a generous welfare state, so it’s easier in many ways for low-income residents than living in another state.
  • 1. Taxes.
  •  The middle class does not pay that 13.3 percent rate on millionaires, but it does pay what long was the “top” tax: 9.3 percent. California’s income tax rates were indexed for inflation in 1978. But that was only after a decade of inflation pushed the middle class into the then-top rate of 9.3 percent. That is, today the middle class pays at a rate originally intended only for the very rich.
  • The middle class in no other state pays income taxes that high. Of the states, seven have no income tax at all. And 37 have a top rate below 9.3 percent.
  • Here are the five states after California with top income tax rates above 9.3 percent: Hawaii at 11 percent; New York 10.9 percent; New Jersey 10.75 percent; Oregon 9.9 percent; and Minnesota 9.85 percent.
  • However, for the middle class, the percentage is lower. For someone making $80,000 a year, here’s the marginal percentage tax rate for a single filer:

  • Oregon 8.75 (and no state sales tax)

  • New York 5.97

  • At Chapman University’s 45th Economic Forecast, held Dec. 13 and co-sponsored by The Epoch Times, economist and President-emeritus Jim Doti brought up an interesting number I hadn’t heard before. “Home prices increased 400 percent since 1990” in California, he said. “5.2 percent per year. Overall inflation then was 2.6 percent—roughly half. Home prices increased two times CPI,” the consumer price index.
  • I came to California just before that, in 1987, and rented a nice one-bedroom apartment in Huntington Beach for $600 a month. In 1993 I moved to a nearby place and the price was about the same, $700 in the late 1990s. The rent crept up over the years to $1,000 in 2010, still tolerable. Then the rent started soaring, and I had to move. Today those two places rent for $2,429. My income sure didn’t go up four times in that period.
  • But here are the median home prices in the other states I listed above for their relatively high income taxes:

  • Massachusetts $422,856
  • Oregon $361,970
  • New Jersey $335,607
  • New York $321,934

And here are some states with no income tax:

  • But according to the U.S. Census bureau, the median household income in California in 2021 was only $84,097, compared to $70,784 for the national median. That is, it’s 19 percent higher in the Golden State—which hardly covers the vastly greater expense of taxes and housing in California.
  • Which makes me wonder why I’m still living here. These two things—the highest taxes and second-highest housing prices—make it almost impossible for the middle class to accumulate capital to buy a home, start a business, or even raise a family.
  • Conclusion: Adios, Middle Class
  • It’s simply impossible to be in the middle class in California, especially if you have kids. It’s no wonder more people keep leaving. At the Chapman Forecast, Doti provided the latest data, “Net domestic migration has been negative since 2011,” meaning more people leaving for other U.S. states than came here. “For the most recent year, 2021, it was negative 280,000.” If that keeps up, during the 2020s decade, California would lose 2.8 million people to other states.

Poll: Overwhelming Majority of Americans ‘Concerned’ About Biden’s Economy 
  • Most Americans “remain concerned” about the economy under President Joe Biden, despite his claims that he is “building the economy of the future,” a new Rasmussen Reports poll found.
  • Out of 1,000 likely voters surveyed between December 12-13, 86 percent say they are concerned about the economy, including 60 percent who are “very concerned,” reflecting an overall increase in concern since August. Only 13 percent are “not concerned” about the economy. The margin of error is ±3 percentage points at the 95 percent level of confidence:
  • Voters across every political category report being at least “somewhat concerned about the economy,” Republicans at 93 percent, Democrats at 81 percent, and unaffiliated voters at 85 percent. However, Democrats (45 percent) are much less likely to be “very concerned” about the economy compared to Republicans (77 percent) and unaffiliated voters (60 percent).
  • A majority of likely voters (61 percent) also believe the U.S. economy has gotten worse, compared to 18 percent who think it has improved. Seventeen percent say the economy has stayed roughly the same over the past year.

DHS Says It Will Close Gaps Along Southwest Border Wall As End Of Title 42 Looms

  • Nearly two years after newly elected President Joe Biden ordered a halt to construction on the project, the Department of Homeland Security announced on Dec. 13 that it will work to close gaps along the southwest border of the wall between the United States and Mexico.
 Biden’s 2020 campaign promise was that he would not build “one more foot” of the border wall, which was one of former president Donald Trump’s most prominent objectives.
  • The Biden administration is confronted with finding solutions to address the end of Title 42, which is set to expire on Dec. 21. DHS has said that could lead to an estimated 9,000 to 14,000 illegal immigrants crossing from Mexico into the United States every day.

MSNBC Guest Suggests EU Could Bring ‘Sanctions’ Against Twitter After Platform Suspended Journalists

  • A MSNBC guest suggested   that the European Union could bring “sanctions” against Twitter following the suspension of eight journalists on the platform Thursday.
  • “Just a couple of weeks ago, the EU’s industry commissioner, Thierry Breton, did threaten to ban Twitter and said so in a conversation with Elon Musk.
  • Vinocour noted that both Germany and France raised concerns about the banning of journalists, and noted that Mastodon, a competitor to Twitter, had its account suspended.

  • 2. The #TwitterFiles are revealing more every day about how the government collects, analyzes, and flags your social media content. 
  • 3. Twitter’s contact with the FBI was constant and pervasive, as if it were a subsidiary. 
  • 4. Between January 2020 and November 2022, there were over 150 emails between the FBI and former Twitter Trust and Safety chief Yoel Roth. 
  • 5. Some are mundane, like San Francisco agent Elvis Chan wishing Roth a Happy New Year along with a reminder to attend “our quarterly call next week.” Others are requests for information into Twitter users related to active investigations. 
  • 6. But a surprisingly high number are requests by the FBI for Twitter to take action on election misinformation, even involving joke tweets from low-follower accounts. 
  • 7. The FBI’s social media-focused task force, known as FTIF, created in the wake of the 2016 election, swelled to 80 agents and corresponded with Twitter to identify alleged foreign influence and election tampering of all kinds. 
  • 8. Federal intelligence and law enforcement reach into Twitter included the Department of Homeland Security, which partnered with security contractors and think tanks to pressure Twitter to moderate content. 
  • 9. It’s no secret the government analyzes bulk data for all sorts of purposes, everything from tracking terror suspects to making economic forecasts. 
  • 10. The #TwitterFiles show something new: agencies like the FBI and DHS regularly sending social media content to Twitter through multiple entry points, pre-flagged for moderation. 
  • 11. What stands out is the sheer quantity of reports from the government. Some are aggregated from public hotlines:Image
  • 12.An unanswered question: do agencies like FBI and DHS do in-house flagging work themselves, or farm it out? “You have to prove to me that inside the fucking government you can do any kind of massive data or AI search,” says one former intelligence officer.

  • 18.In an internal email from November 5, 2022, the FBI’s National Election Command Post, which compiles and sends on complaints, sent the SF field office a long list of accounts that “may warrant additional action”:Image

  • 27.At the bottom of that letter, she lists a series of “escalations” apparently raised at the meeting, which were already “handled.”
  • 28. About one, she writes: “Flagged a specific Tweet on Illinois use of modems to transmit election results in possible violation of the civic integrity policy (except they do use that tech in limited circumstances).”
