- Former Senator John Kerry, climate envoy for the Biden administration, scolded the world for not making enough sacrifices to fight climate change at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai on Wednesday.
- “There’s too much business as usual still. We have got to bring people to the table who are not yet there. And we will make progress in that,” Kerry said.
- “Not everybody is doing what they promised to do. And needless to say, that’s a problem and we need to have accountability at this COP, for that lack of follow-through by some,” he lectured.
- Kerry said the world – by which he presumably means the Western world, since the developing world has made it clear that climate change is purely a Western problem – will “need to step up and help get the job done at a faster rate.”
- Kerry said this will require “trillions of dollars” in new spending, which is a problem because there are no more trillions of dollars to spend. The United States is teetering on the verge of fiscal apocalypse from irresponsible government spending, other Western powers can no longer conjure trillions from thin air with debt-fueled spending binges, China thinks it already spends enough on green energy, and the Global South flatly refuses to go broke for climate change.

IRS Warns Taxpayers That Hiring Of Tax Enforcers Will ‘Ramp Up’ Soon
- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) plans to increase its hiring of tax enforcers in coming months, the agency’s chief has revealed, putting taxpayers on higher alert as the IRS bolsters the ranks of its enforcement army.
- “I would expect hiring activity on the enforcement side to ramp up as we enter into 2024,” Mr. Werfel told
- Republicans have warned that the IRS’ $60 billion cash infusion from the Inflation Reduction Act would be used to hire an “army” of 87,00 tax enforcers whose work would lead to an increase in the rate of tax audits targeting ordinary Americans.
- “The high-income terminology is being used loosely inside the IRS with no common understanding of what the term means,” the watchdog said.
- TIGTA explained that the IRS continues to rely on old tax examination activity codes adopted half a century ago with the Tax Reform Act of 1976, which used a $200,000 threshold to measure high-income returns.
- Currently, “there is no way to identify the complete population of taxpayers that meet the criterion of $400,000 or more specified by the current Treasury Secretary,” the watchdog said in its report, warning that the IRS’ tax enforcers could end up casting their net more widely than its chief promised.

- The number of Americans suffering from hunger and food insecurity exploded by more than 10 million under President Joe Biden, according to a U.S. Agriculture Department report this week that provided fresh evidence of inflation‘s impact of a basic staple of life.
- The report found 44.2 million Americans were living in food-insecure households in 2022, compared to 33.8 million the year before.
- “From 2021 to 2022, there were statistically significant increases in food insecurity and very low food security for nearly all subgroups of households described in this report,” USDA reported Wednesday.
- Officials noted that economics were a key factor on food insecurity, particularly cost.

- North Korea warned early Saturday morning that any interference with its spy satellite would be a “declaration of war.”
