ADP Reports Big Jump In Jobs In December, Wage Growth Plunges

  • Following last month’s big miss, analysts expected a modest uptick of 150k new jobs in today’s ADP Employment Report, but instead – and frustrating for The Fed – ADP reports the addition of 235k jobs in December.

 

  • Job resurgence was seen in the last two months of 2022 led by consumer-facing service industries.

Hiring was strong across small and medium establishments while large establishments saw a drop in employment of 151,000 jobs.

  • Leisure and hospitality; trade, transportation and utilities; and information sectors had the sharpest declines in pay gains.

Job changers’ pay growth also fell to the lowest level in 10 months.

Finally, we note that ADP has under-forecast (fewer jobs added) the BLS numbers for 5 straight months…

REPORT: Amazon To Lay Off Over 17,000 Employees

  • Amazon will reportedly be laying off over 17,000 employees in its corporate workforce over the next few weeks, thousands more than the company initially planned.
  • The layoffs will reportedly be concentrated in its devices business, recruiting department and retail side, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Thousands of Amazon layoffs began last year and the rest will occur over the coming weeks.

 

  • The company said Nov. 16 that it planned to layoff corporate employees as a cost-controlling measure. Amazon was planning to cut about 10,000 employees, including in its retail and human resources divisions, The Wall Street Journal reported.
  • The company had over 1.5 million employees as of September, mostly in its warehouses. It’s unclear if any warehouse workers will be affected by the layoffs.

Fed Admits Recession Is “Plausible”, Pushes Back Against “Unwarranted” Easing Expectations

So what did The Minutes say?

The headline from today’s minutes is that it is clear that Fed officials were not pleased by the surge in stocks (easing in financial conditions) ahead of the meeting, warning against an “unwarranted” easing in financial conditions:

“Participants noted that, because monetary policy worked importantly through financial markets, an unwarranted easing in financial conditions, especially if driven by a misperception by the public of the Committee’s reaction function, would complicate the Committee’s effort to restore price stability.”

Additionally, It’s also interesting how there are “many” Fed officials saying that there was a need to balance two-sided risks.

This suggests there is a growing split at The Fed.

Judge Blocks Oregon’s Enhanced Background Check Law for Firearm Purchases

  • A judge placed a hold on a portion of Oregon’s recently passed gun law that enhances background check requirements for firearm purchases, leaving the legislation completely blocked.
  • The ruling is another setback for the law, Ballot Measure 114, which is now entirely paused as legal challenges to various portions of the law make their way through Oregon’s court system. The judge determined that the law’s heightened background check requirement could not be implemented while the court continues to debate the other portions of the law, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting, as plaintiffs argue the law violates the state’s constitution.
  • In December, 36,000 Oregon residents were waitlisted in the background check process, Karl Durkheimer, owner of Oregon’s Northwest Armory gun store, said on Fox News.

    “Two things are happening. There’s fear they won’t be able to get a gun, but there’s the actual logistics that they won’t be able to do the background check. It’s going to take a year before an Oregonian has a permit,” Durkheimer said.

More Than 270 Sudden Cardiac Deaths in US Athletes After Vaccination: Peer-Reviewed Study

  •  Two hundred seventy-nine athletes and former athletes in the United States have died from cardiac arrests after taking COVID-19 vaccines, according to data from a recent peer-reviewed study.
  • Authored by structural biologist Panagis Polykretis, and board-certified internist and cardiologist Dr. Peter McCullough, the study’s cited data found that from 2021 to 2022, at least 1,616 cardiac arrests have been globally documented in vaccinated athletes, with 1,114 of those being fatal.
  • The global data also showed that between 2021 to 2022, former and current American athletes made up 279 of the mortalities.
  • Athletes have a lower chance of cardiac arrest and sudden cardiac death as compared to nonathletes. A 2016 U.S. study calculated that nonathletes, compared to athletes, have a 29 times higher chance of sudden cardiac death.
  • One of the reasons is because “athletes are screened out for the common causes of sudden death on the playing field,” McCullough told The Epoch Times.
  • McCullough pointed to a European study that tracked sudden cardiac deaths in European athletes over 38 years from 1966 to 2004. The study reported 1,101 sudden cardiac deaths over the interval, which Polykretis estimated would be around 29 deaths per year.

  • In the United States, it is estimated that 100 to 150 athletes die every year from sudden death.
  • The data cited in the study, however, showed that in 2022 alone, over 190 deaths from cardiac arrests have been reported in current and former athletes.
  • This does not include the deaths of athletes with unknown vaccine statuses and those whose names did not make it into the media.

Florida state law requires oversight over higher education curricula, requiring officials to “identify the degree programs offered by public postsecondary educational institutions.”“Each Florida College System and State University System institution must complete the attached document to provide a comprehensive list of all staff programs, and campus activities related to diversity, equity and inclusion and critical race theory within our state colleges and universities,” the letter reads.

  • Pinal County’s outgoing elections director collected a $25,000 bonus for running a smooth election despite reporting final results with significant inaccuracies, including around 500 uncounted votes in the neck-and-neck attorney general race.Virginia Ross, the former county recorder brought in to oversee the election on a short-term contract, either did not catch the mistakes or failed to disclose them before the results were certified in November, according to county officials.The inaccuracies were only revealed publicly last week as part of the results of the statewide recount, and officials attributed the problems mostly to human error during ballot counting on Election Day. This week the new elections director indicated that Ross may not have taken steps after the election to ensure the results were accurate. Regardless, she collected the bonus and retired.Ross was brought on specifically to fix the county’s elections after a disastrous primary in which county officials made mistakes they later said were easily preventable, such as not ordering enough ballots for polling places.   •   Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy has offered his critics a mountain of new concessions before, during and after a round of Wednesday night negotiations, Politico reports.
  • The concessions include (via Politico):
  • A one-member “motion to vacate”: The GOP leader appears to have finally acquiesced to a demand to lower the threshold needed to force a vote ousting a speaker to just one member. While McCarthy originally indicated that restoring the one-member “motion to vacate” was a red line, his allies now argue that there’s not a huge practical difference between this and his previous offer of requiring five members to trigger the vote.
  • Rules Committee seats for the Freedom Caucus: McCarthy is prepared to give the House Freedom Caucus two seats on the powerful House Rules Committee, which oversees the amendment process for the floor. (Some conservatives are still holding out for four seats on the panel.) There are also talks about giving a third seat to a conservative close to the Freedom Caucus but not in it — someone like Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky. Who would pick those members is still under discussion. Typically, it’s the speaker’s prerogative, but conservatives want to choose their own members for these jobs.
  • A vote on term limits: This is a key demand of Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), who has proposed a constitutional amendment limiting lawmakers to three terms in the House.
  • Major changes to the appropriations process: Fears of another trillion-plus-dollar omnibus spending bill have been a major driver of the conservative backlash to McCarthy.   • You can’t just drain the swamp with a magic wand. We need a Republican speaker to keep control of the House and it looks like McCarthy is the only one that the remaining (R) shills in Congress will push through.
  • Obviously we would prefer someone other than McCarthy as Speaker, but you play the cards you are dealt. Unfortunately we are holding a shitty hand, but that doesn’t mean we can’t beat the house.
