Iran Claims It Fired on and Seized Ships – but There’s More to the Story

  • Meanwhile, the U.S. is even seizing its ships, like the MV Touska, that tried to run the U.S. blockade with some bad materials aboard that could have helped their missile program.
  • So what are the regime’s options? They can continue to try to make trouble in the Strait.
  • Iranian state TV claimed on Wednesday that the regime had fired on three ships and seized two of them. Of course, because they’re the regime, there are some problems with that story.
  • The first part of the story is that four MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) ships ran the same line as the cruise ships had been running to avoid the IRGC. You can see them turn off their transponders as they were going through the Strait, and then those coming back on again after they made it past.
  • Iran claims they fired on them and seized them. They also claimed they fired on the Euphoria and that it is stranded off the Iranian coast.
  • But the present location shows that the Euphoria is at Khor Fakkan, in the United Arab Emirates. So that part about them being “stranded” off the Iranian coast sounds like a lot of b.s. It appears to have made it past the Strait and is in the UAE.
  • The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) said that one of the ships reported being fired on by an IRGC gunboat without any prior warning, about 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman.
  • So the problem may have been that these three ships weren’t hugging Oman as much and were further north toward Iran and the “approved lane” that Iran is monitoring. The crews are reportedly uninjured.Now this is obviously an effort to flex after the seizure of their ship by the U.S. The problem? It’s not U.S. ships, and they’re just antagonizing more countries/other people over their actions. That only increases the calls that they need to be dealt with.

  • Saudi Arabia (eastern coast landings)
  • Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait
  • Oman and Iraq (directly connected via systems like 2Africa Pearls, Fibre in Gulf/FIG, GBI, FALCON, AAE-1, TGN-Gulf, etc.)

These countries could face near-total loss of high-speed international internet, cloud services, banking/financial systems, international calls, and data traffic. Local networks might still work internally, but anything crossing borders (most modern services) would collapse or slow dramatically.

Why them first? Many cables physically land or transit the southern Gulf, where the bulk of GCC digital infrastructure (including new AI/cloud megaprojects) sits. Iran-linked media has explicitly mapped these as vulnerable. Southern Gulf states are far more dependent on these maritime routes than Iran itself.

Significant secondary impacts

  • India: ~60% of its internet traffic routes through Gulf cables (e.g., Mumbai–Europe links via systems like SEA-ME-WE, AAE-1, EIG). Expect major slowdowns, outages, or latency spikes for Europe/West Asia traffic.

You’d see widespread latency, slowed cloud services, financial trading delays, and disrupted streaming/gaming — but not a full global blackout. Traffic can reroute via other oceans (though slower and more congested).

In the runup to Omar’s first race for Congress, in 2018, AlphaNews reported on her 2013 arrest,

[Then] State Rep. Ilhan Omar was arrested in 2013 for trespassing and booked at Hennepin County Jail “to prevent further criminal conduct,” according to a newly uncovered police report.

The incident took place on January 18, 2013 following an event at the Minneapolis Convention Center featuring former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The Somali president was set to stay the night at the Hotel Ivy, causing large groups of Somalis to follow the presidential convoy to the hotel, including Omar.

AlphaNews includes a copy of the police report with their story. Omar and others protested Mohamud’s appearance and were ejected from the hotel, en masse. She and a handful of other protesters snuck back into the hotel,

Ten minutes after the original encounter, the officer reports finding Omar seated in a different area of the lobby. According to the officer’s account, Omar “remained defiant” as he informed her that she would be arrested for trespassing if she didn’t leave.

She was taken by the police to Hennepin County Jail to prevent further harassment of the President.

    •  Florida’s congressional delegation is 20 Republicans to 8 Democrats (out of 28 seats total). Republicans drew an aggressive map in 2022 under Gov. Ron DeSantis.
    •  DeSantis called a special legislative session (Republican trifecta control) specifically for congressional redistricting. It was originally set for mid-April but was deliberately delayed to April 28–May 1, 2026—right after Virginia’s April 21 vote—so Florida could respond to whatever Democrats did there.
       Republicans are looking to redraw the map to add 2–5 more GOP-leaning seats (net gain of up to 5 in some early projections). This would directly offset Virginia’s potential Democratic pickup of 3–4 seats.
